Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear a short but powerful plea from the disciples: “Increase our faith.” These are words we might find rising in our own hearts when life feels uncertain, when prayers seem unanswered, when we face challenges bigger than ourselves. The disciples knew that following Jesus would require more trust than they could muster on their own. So, they turned to the only One who could give what they lacked.
Jesus’ answer might surprise us: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” A mustard seed is tiny — almost invisible in the palm of your hand. Yet Jesus says that even the smallest spark of true faith has the power to move what seems immovable.
Faith is not about how much we have; it’s about who we place it in. We sometimes imagine faith as something we must “build up” on our own, as if we could measure it by feelings or achievements. But real faith is a relationship of trust leaning on God’s strength, not ours. It’s choosing to believe that God is present, good, and at work even when life is confusing or hard.
So, what does it mean to ask Jesus to “increase our faith” today? It’s inviting Him deeper into our ordinary lives:
Faith is not something we wait to “feel.” It is something we choose and practice, step by step showing up to pray, forgiving, serving, and loving. And the more we practice, the more our faith grows, often quietly, like that tiny seed becoming a strong tree.
This week, I invite each of us to pray this prayer. Not a vague wish, but a conscious opening of our hearts to the One who can strengthen us.
Prayer for Increased Faith
Lord Jesus, increase my faith.
When I am uncertain, give me trust in Your plan.
When I am discouraged, remind me that even a mustard seed of faith can move mountains.
When I struggle to love or forgive, strengthen my heart with Your mercy.
Plant in me a faith that grows deep and steady — a faith that bears fruit in my words and actions.
May I follow You with courage and hope, believing that You are with me always.
With you in prayer and hope,
Fr. Jeff
